Dental Procedures That Improve Teeth’s Appearance

Dentists can do more than just pull out your damaged tooth and hand you a lollipop afterwards. In fact, they can generally perform a wide array of procedures to address specific dental concerns of patients. Cosmetic dentists, in particular, apply various solutions to improve the appearance of teeth. Below are three of the most common procedures and solutions that dentists offer their patients.

Teeth Whitening – This is a dental procedure that removes any discoloration or stain that has accumulated on the teeth. Teeth whitening is mainly done for cosmetic purposes, but may also improve a patient’s dental health if the discoloration was caused by an existing medical condition. The procedure removes stains caused by cigarettes, medications, age, and/or dark beverages like coffee or tea.

Dental Crowns – These are dental “caps” commonly made of porcelain or ceramic used to cover teeth that have been damaged. They help improve a damaged tooth’s appearance and function. Typically, the natural tooth is filed down to make room for the crown.

Tooth Veneers – These are thin slices of specially-shaped porcelain or plastic that are glued onto a chipped or broken tooth. They are similar to dental crowns, but while a crown covers the entire tooth, a veneer covers only a portion of it, typically the front. As with a crown, natural teeth may also have to be ground or filed down to make room for the traditional teeth veneers. Other options, such as Invisalign, may not require natural teeth to be filed or ground down.
